Local SEO for plumbers: own the Map Pack when the water is on the floor

Emergency plumbing searches are decided on a map with three spots. Local SEO is the work that puts your shop in one of them for the services and towns you want, and keeps it there.

V-11 / How the map decides

Three things decide which plumbers make the map

Google says it ranks local results on distance, relevance and prominence. For a plumbing company, here is what each one means in practice, and which ones we can move.

01

Distance

How far your business is from the person searching, or from the town named in the search. You can't move your shop, and no honest agency can either. That is why a plumber two miles from the searcher often beats a better-reviewed one twenty miles away.

What we do: make sure Google knows every town you really serve, and build organic town pages for the places just outside the map's reach.

02

Relevance

How well your profile and website match what was searched. "Plumber" as the primary category is the start. Your services list, your secondary categories and the pages on your site tell Google whether you do drain cleaning, water heaters or gas lines.

What we do: categories, a complete services list, and one page on your site for each core service so every search has a clear match.

03

Prominence

How well known and trusted your business looks: the number and recency of reviews, your rating, links to your site, mentions across directories. This is the part that responds most to steady work.

What we do: a review routine, citation cleanup and links from relevant sites, every month, with each link listed in your report.

V-12 / Your profile

A Google Business Profile built for emergency work

Most plumbing profiles we look at are half finished. The fields that get skipped are the ones that decide night and weekend calls.

Categories that match the work

"Plumber" as primary, then secondary categories only for services you really do. A wrong primary category is one of the most common reasons a solid shop never shows on the map.

Hours that tell the truth

If someone answers at night, the hours should say so. If you only take emergencies after hours, the profile and your site should explain how that works and what it costs. Holiday hours set ahead of time, every year.

A full services list and service areas

Every service you want calls for, from drain cleaning to tankless installs, each with a short description. The towns you serve listed as service areas, with your street address hidden if customers don't come to you.

Photos and posts from real jobs

Before-and-after shots, the truck at a job, a new water heater in place. Regular uploads show an active business; we give your techs a simple routine for it.

V-13 / Reviews

Reviews: recent, steady and asked of everyone

A pile of five-year-old reviews doesn't help much against a shop that gets a few new ones every week. The fix is a routine, not a campaign.

  • Ask every customer, right after the job, by text with a direct link to your review form.
  • Let the tech ask in person, then the office follows up the same day.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm voice. The next customer is reading.
  • Never offer a discount for a review and never ask only the happy customers. Both break Google's rules and can cost you the profile.

V-14 / Beyond the profile

Citations, service-area pages and the spam on your map

Citations

Your business name, phone number and service area should read the same on Yelp, Angi, the BBB, Nextdoor and the data aggregators that feed smaller directories. Old phone numbers and duplicate listings from a past address confuse Google. We find them and fix them.

Service-area pages

A page per town only works when it says something true about that town: the older homes with galvanized pipe, the hard water, the jobs you've done there. We write those, and skip the copy-paste pages that swap a town name and help nobody.

Spam listings

Plenty of plumbing Map Packs carry lead-generation listings with fake addresses and names stuffed with keywords. They take spots from real shops. We report them through Google's own process when we find them in your area.

V-15 / Proof

Roofing contractor, Florida. March to September 2025 (6 months)

A roofer who reached first place on the map

Not a plumber, but the closest thing in our published work: a local home-service contractor whose best jobs started with an emergency search. Bigger competitors held the map. The work was the same playbook described on this page: hyperlocal and emergency keywords, a rebuilt Google Business Profile with geo-tagged photos and detailed services, citation cleanup across home-service directories, a review-request routine and local links.

V-17 / Questions

Local SEO questions from plumbers

More on the bigger picture in our guide to plumbing SEO.

How much does local SEO cost for a plumber?

Our plans are $125, $235, $325 or $575 a month, month to month. All of them include Google Business Profile work, citations and links; the bigger plans add more keywords, more links, an on-page audit, competitor research and more domains. A single-location shop in a busy metro usually fits Golden at $235.

Can my plumbing company rank in the Map Pack without a storefront?

Yes. Most plumbers are service-area businesses: you hide your street address on Google Business Profile and list the areas you serve instead. Google ranks you from the address you verified, even though searchers don't see it. What you must not do is use a virtual office or a fake address to appear in another town.

Why does a competitor with fewer reviews rank above me?

Usually distance or relevance. They may be closer to where the search happened, have a better matching primary category, a fuller services list or a site with a page for the exact service searched. Reviews matter, but they are one input among several. A free checkup shows which one is holding you back.

How many Google reviews does a plumber need?

There is no fixed number. What matters is how you compare with the three listings above you, and how recent your reviews are. Our review gap calculator shows how many months it would take to pass the third listing if you asked every customer.

Should I set my Google hours to 24 hours?

Only if a person really answers at 2 a.m. Google can show you as open for more night searches, but customers who reach voicemail tend to leave a bad review and call the next shop. If you take emergencies after hours with a surcharge, say so on your site and keep the hours honest.

Can I show up in towns where I don't have an office?

In the Map Pack, it gets harder the farther the searcher is from your verified address. In the organic results below the map, a genuinely useful town page can rank anywhere you work. We use both: the profile for the towns near you, pages for the ones farther out.

What can I do about fake plumber listings in my area?

Report them. Lead-generation listings with keyword-stuffed names or fake addresses break Google's guidelines. Suggest an edit on the listing, and for repeat offenders use Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form with screenshots. We do this for clients when we find spam in their Map Pack.

Shutoff / Next step

See which of the three things is holding you back.

Tell us your website and the towns your trucks cover. By the next business day you will have a short written checkup: where you sit on the map for your main services, how your listing and site stack up against the shops ranked above you, and what we would fix first. It costs nothing and nobody will call you.
